Mule Deer Habitat - The Draw

One of the many non-descript and lacking in any distinction from any other draws that hold Mule Deer seen well camouflaged in the top center.

Notice how short the grass is. These deer did not get up until we were right on top of them. Although there are three in the picture above there is actually five Mule Deer with one having a small size half rack.

This was early morning on an overcast cold day where they much preferred to remain where they were rather than be pushed out. Even though the picture makes them appear to be at a long range they were well within easy shooting distance and stayed standing still watch us as we continued on our way passing on them for lack of racks.

Mule Deer Tag Draw Success Tactic

Any chance to study Mule Deer is time well spent.

The first tactic is to simply apply each year through the regular non-resident or resident draw. The MAHA advantage is that we lease land in three very good Mule Deer management units. With the Kansas Mule Deer tag application allowing up to four choices of tags and locations the MAHA hunter has the opportunity to place as his first three choices three Mule Deer management units thereby increasing his chances to be drawn for one. On the same application the hunter may place as his fourth choice a whitetail management unit that he would like to hunt should he not get drawn for a Mule Deer tag. And that latter event should be anticipated. If successfully drawing the whitetail tag with as his fourth choice that hunter does not build Mule Deer preference points. Only when applying strictly for Mule Deer and not drawn for any tag does a hunter build preference points. Currently the appearance is a requirement of 4 points before predicting tag draw success.

Residents are far more likely to successfully draw for a Mule Deer tag than non-residents due to the limited tags made available each season. Non-residents should take the approach they will have to apply each season for a good number of years before successfully drawing Mule Deer tag.
