Kansas is not a friendly deer hunting state for the single deer hunting lease
hunter due to Kansas being a draw tag state with restrictive deer hunting
management units. The first element of a single lease or farm being limited to a specific deer management unit requires a hunter to successfully draw his tag of choice for that one specific unit. This is an all or nothing proposition and few of us can consider ourselves lucky enough to successfully draw a specific tag each season. This system makes getting a deer lease first and tag second a costly option for those non-draw years. Reversing that process has another set of drawbacks.
The approach of waiting to successfully draw a Kansas tag and then seek a deer lease may be a more economical approach on two counts. The first is that the Kansas tag application allows multiple deer management units to be applied for (2 for bowhunting and 4 for firearms). This allows the hunter not limited to a specific management unit to apply for multiple units and greatly increase his chances of getting a tag. The drawback in this approach is then to find a lease in the limited time from the July tag results notification and the earliest season start date of mid September. This period is even more restrictive for those that may want to pre-season scout. Overall, the proposition of sustaining a year to year Kansas deer hunting lease is expensive and typically beyond the reach of many deer hunters. Some try to offset this expense with sub-lease agreements for non-draw years and that approach opens an entirely new set of problems typically requiring more work than the benefits gained. Some of the stories told are of sub-lease deer hunters without obligation to the landowner ruining the hunting lease holder’s relationship with the landowner and other adversities. While it may appear this article may imply that Mid-America Hunting Association is the right alternative to privately held Kansas deer hunting leases we do not propose that idea. For those that can afford to buy their own land in Kansas or pay for a year-to-year deer hunting lease regardless of tag draw success we offer that having a dedicated Kansas deer lease is probably superior to our approach to paid whitetail deer hunting. However, for the average work a day self guided deer hunter our cost to benefit ratio is superior to the costs of a single Kansas deer lease in one specific trophy whitetail deer management unit. Plus of course the Missouri and Iowa deer hunting options we also provide. In any case, life is short and there will always be more work than fun. For every deer hunter they should select the option that gives them the most personal satisfaction.
