Hunting in northeast Kansas on Dec. 3, opening day of the state's firearms deer season, he took a big 12-point buck on land leased by the Mid-America Game Bird Association.
That would have been impressive enough. But this was the third trophy buck Carpenter had
taken this season. He shot two other 10-pointers, both big enough to qualify for the
national Pope and Young Club recognition, during the archery season. One deer was taken in
Kansas, the other in Missouri.
``My friends say I must carry a golden horseshoe along with me,' he said. ``This is the
best year I've ever had.''
