Jacob & Dad

Latest Success

Hey Jon I just wanted to let you know how my hunt went. I had a great hunt. It is very easy to sum up. On the days when the weather was cool, deer activity was high. I passed on 5-10 bucks on some days. I ended up shooting this 3 yo old 8 pointer during a snow storm at the end of my hunt. "Well 4" of snow qualifies as a storm for a Louisiana Boy." I have also included a couple of nice trail cam pics. The 10 pt. is the deer that we talked about. I can't wait until next year. I only hope that it can equal this great trip. Thanks for all the help. Jacob F

Previous Deer Harvest

Jon and John,

We arrived 2 days early so we could do a little looking around.

Scouting day one:
-woke up to 4inches of snow "we thought that was pretty cool"
-rode in the truck for a while (saw 3 possible shooters and some doe)
-took dad to a stand site I had scouted 2 months prior. Saw 9 deer (2 small bucks) in 5 minutes at this set up," dad thought that was pretty cool also."  beautiful site to see them against snowy backdrop.
-secured that stand and one other on a nearby farm.
-rode the roads at dark and saw 0 deer

Scouting day two:
-rode roads at daylight and didn't see much.
-scouted a couple of "new to me properties." found a lost bird dog, "Spot" on one of these brought Spot to the motel and feed him. "Spot was hungry!!!"  later I was able to contact his owner. Spot's real name was Duke. he had been lost for 6 days and was 8 miles from where he was lost. Duke's daddy came all the way from Kentucky to retrieve him. I even got invited to a 2005 Kent. bow hunt. "Pretty good deal for a good deed!!"
-rode roads again at dark- saw lots of deer and a true Mid-west Giant.

Hunt day 1
-12 degrees "cold for a Cajun" but beautiful morning.
-little deer activity did see a nice shooter being chased by local drivers, he ran right
through one of our properties.

Hunt day 2
-16 degrees "still cold for a Cajun"
-saw a few doe early but still no buck activity
-1:30pm things changed in a hurry. I was able to shoot a buck that I had seen on my scouting trip 2 months earlier. He was in the little grassy draw that I thought he would be in. We est. live weight at 275lbs. We have no experience with this deer this
size but I think the est. is short if anything. he is an 8 point that will gross right at 150.
A dream come true.

Hunt day 3
-20 degrees "still cold"
-Dad and I hunted together
-It took 10 minutes to finally see the deer that was walking in the bottom below us. In the extremely low light of early morning I made the
suggestion that he was a shooter. That was all dad needed to hear, and he was down. What I didn't see in the low light, was the broken main beam. Again est. weight 230 using the intact side as a guide he would have scored in the mid 130's. Another very nice deer, even better because I was able to share the experience with Dad.

Sorry I wasn't able to keep this letter as short and to the point as usual. Too much drama, when big bucks are involved.

Thanks MAHA for another great hunting adventure. My check for next year is already in the mail.

Sincerely, Jacob
