DIY Deer Hunts

Iowa spring turkey hunting is not heavily employed and even less used in conjunction with deer scouting.

Iowa turkey tags are by draw, they are more costly than that of Kansas or Missouri and Iowa's spring season is shorter and broken over different time periods making planning more restrictive. For the most part those that plan a spring turkey hunt in conjunction with deer scouting do so by turkey hunting north Missouri with its more liberal season and cheaper tags and then traveling a hour or so to deer scout our southern Iowa leases.

Contributing to the lower pressure of a combination Iowa turkey hunt and deer scouting trip is the Iowa deer tags have a lower selection rate than that of Kansas. The Iowa archery deer tag typically requires a non-draw year preference point or two before tag issue, shotgun tags zero to one point and the Iowa Muzzleloader tag the highest selection rate. With Iowa's limited deer tag draw potential the decision model would be to spring turkey hunt in Iowa for those years most likely to get a fall deer tag. With this in mind and recognizing most deer hunters will not deer hunt Iowa each year an more effective approach would be for that spring turkey season when the deer hunter does they think he will draw a deer tag they should give us a call for our most recent Iowa observations. We will provide a list of where we have observed not just turkey flocks, but that also of the most recent trophy deer. The hunter should then conduct his own do it yourself spring turkey hunt and combined deer scouting trip.

On this last point of the Mid-America Hunting Association staff giving Iowa turkey and deer hunting recommendations the member and self guided Iowa hunter must first realize the Association rules do not require these recommendations. We will always provide them to the first year member as a means of insuring they get as good of a head start as possible. Other than first year members receive copies of our latest observations notebook as a reply to their emailed letters and pictures of their hunts.

Travis sent these in as motivation for the rest of us.

Thank you Travis, nicely composed pictures. Thank you for taking that extra effort to set up the good back grounds and bird.
