Particulars

Iowa shotgun deer hunting is a split deer hunting season with Iowa's deer season overlapping that of Kansas and after Missouri’s firearms deer hunting.

Iowa is subject to greater snowfall that is not only good for whitetail hunts, it is also good to firm up the mud roads to allow for easier travel. For those that have been out our way during wet years, having hard surface dirt roads makes any hunt better. While this is a small point to our overall whitetail hunts it is a big one later when stuck.

That snowfall combined with the more dense whitetail herd in the southern regions makes our lease land to be in one of the better regions of the state. The whitetail are dense to the point that Iowa is issuing additional doe tags to help reduce the herd size. With this larger herd size the preponderance of trophy whitetail does relate allowing for plenty of eyes on encounters.

This landform map shows the northern reach of the Grand River Watershed (within the yellow) extending up from Missouri into where we lease our land. An area of large grain row crop fields broken by wooded creek bottoms and wood lots.

Mid-America Hunting Association has lease land in Iowa deer hunting zones 4 and 5.

Iowa's season is always in conflict with that of Kansas as both overlap their firearms seasons. This makes it difficult for those hunters that seek a tag in both states and hope they only successfully draw in one. Anyone hunting both states will be splitting their time and not effectively tackling either unless a great amount of pre season scouting was done to effectively locate any particular trophy whitetail.

Past performance has shown the best case is the deer hunter that only draws one state deer tag over the other and concentrates his effort not just in that one state but also on a selected fewer leases to hunt. The least successful deer hunters as a group within our Association are those that hunt more than one state in a season or too many leases.

Not every one has the time freedom to be a trophy whitetail deer hunter in spite of the best intentions. Those that enjoy deer hunting for the quality of the hunt find the most pleasure from work and family life. We offer deer hunting fore those that enjoy the deer hunt to make the most of it they can.

From a local hunter that found time limited due to a family addition, work and all the other distractions from recreation.

One such hunter

Jon, Shaun, John,

I just finished my 4th deer season with Mid-America. In [location deleted] opening morning I was able to kill the big buck I've been looking for - big 9 pt that scored 164 1/2 and probably weighed 275 lbs at 8 yds. This is the kind of deer I've always hoped for but thought I would probably never get a chance at. If I hadn't started hunting Mid-America land I may never have. I also met a great co-member that I hunted with - Gary - I look forward to many years of great hunts with him. He loves hunting just as much as me.

In [location deleted] I didn't do quiet as well - although I killed 2 doe and had another monster buck as big as the [location deleted] kill within 8 yards but could not get a clear shot - this time hunting on the ground cost me (I've had some good luck on the ground the last 3 years) - my barrel got caught on a small vine as I was trying to get in position for a shot and wouldn't let go. I was pinned down & I couldn't move earlier because a 6 pt was staring at me. Waiting for him to leave, by then the big deer had gotten within 8 yds - he heard me or saw me move & bolted with no clear shot. Missed chance. I also saw another good buck with no shot. Great season though.

Thanks to everyone for your help and providing great land to hunt on.

Sincerely, Roger W.

On all letters and emailed hunting accounts we delete the hunt location so as not to bring undue pressure to that area. We also delete the hunter's last name as past experience has shown that if we do publish the full name that hunter receives unnecessary solicitations. Then finally, just because we posted this one testimonial to one of our Iowa deer hunting pages does not mean that particular whitetail came from Iowa. Trust us that we will get all our hunters to the right region of historical production as good hunts mean membership renewals.
