Do It Yourself Deer Hunting
Do it yourself deer hunting has always been the only deer hunting we have offered, and we help. We, the Association partners, Jon Nee and John Wenzel, will give first hand recommendations where to get started scouting and hunting as well as we provide a local to our deer hunting lease land lodging. Once we get a hunter to the point where he parks his truck, steps out and hunts that hunter takes care of the rest.

Where to deer hunt will always remain the crux of do it yourself deer hunters. All the more so for those that travel for their hunts.
Internet research has opened a world of resources that gives great indication to state regional areas that have more or less potential for a good deer hunts. That internet resource helps narrow down where to hunt nationally and down to state regions, but not where to park the truck.
Another source are the many authoritative deer hunting magazines telling about the latest great region and trophy whitetail deer. Then of course are the QDM, P&Y and B&C resources. Amongst all these resources there is enough overlap to develop confidence of what part of the country has the best trophy deer potential.
With all the information that is available there does always remain that question of where to park the truck, step out and hunt specifically for the self guided hunter. That is where MAHA enters the do it yourself deer hunter effort. We get that hunter to that spot of where to park his truck, step out and deer hunt. That is that right spot in Kansas, Missouri and Iowa.
Our basis for that recommendation of where to deer hunt any of our leases is based on boots on the ground experience with the lease and knowledge of the surrounding regional history of production.

Less used resources are landform maps such as these two for Kansas.
Knowing what landforms mean in terms of deer habitat and hunting quality can narrow down the search where to deer hunt. These two maps show a wealth of information that can quickly delineate between more or less deer productive areas.
In Kansas this distinction is largely based on soil depth and composition that delineates between cattle pasture and row crop production. One has plenty of cover and food and the other little of both with inverse relationship to deer hunting quality.
For this satellite picture highlands of lower quality soil had fast drainage are to the west and the low elevations of watersheds with better soil and crop land use to the east.

The Iowa deer hunting leases locations is within the Grand River Watershed as illustrated on the map above showing the south central region in yellow. This is an area well crossed by tree lined creek bottoms both wet and dry surrounded by row crop fields. In this one compact region on our leases are thousands of small wood patches for cover right next to water and crop land.

What Mid-America Hunting Association brings to DIY deer hunting is the opportunity to have a place to park his truck, step out and deer hunt with the advantages of being on private lease land and without competition from other hunters.
That same deer hunter can have these advantages not just on one deer hunting lease, but on as many as he has time to work and in three states.
