Whitetail

A successful deer hunter told us of his technique. He does the usual scouting. Develops multiple stands on no more than two to three properties. Rotates through his stands until maneuvering in on the deer of choice. His idea is that pre-hunt scouting is only the start and that scouting continues during the hunt. However, the key is to move to stands within a relatively small area rather than jumping around to multiple farms over a larger area every day. Moving around too much simply works the odds of not seeing a deer of choice greater than by careful observation. Moving through stands on one farm increases the chance to get eyes on the trophy of choice. Once he has covered a farm and has not seen the deer he wants he then moves onto the next farm with three farms being the most he has covered during a season before harvesting his trophy. He also pointed out his desire for other hunters to jump from property to property as he feels these hunters simply move deer with their rapid disturbance of the ground.

Essentially, the idea that a non-resident hunter has a friendly point of contact in the area to get him started in the right direction, knows there will be land to hunt and that he can hunt his own style, makes all the difference in the world of gaining confidence he will have a good time of it.

Deer caddy is a sign of a smart hunter. Some properties absolutely forbid vehicle access. A deer caddy will make the haul a lot easier.
