Gun Deer 23

The Whitetail Deer is the king of the mid-west. While we have bison, antelope, elk and Mule Deer none are in sufficient numbers compared to the whitetail for true trophy deer hunting. For those that have scouted or hunted the central mid-west the trophy whitetail deer of dreams may be seen once and never again when the deer tag is in the pocket. For many the wall hanger buck is a past memory with future hunts meant to surpass previous achievements. Below is a sampling of what whitetails our hunters have successfully hunt on their own.

Bird hunters know very well the large bucks  that daytime loaf in large high grass fields. Hunters are finding this out begrudgingly as most focus on timber. Covering a tree lined transit strip between this type of bedding and a feed area is how many hunters tag their trophies.

CRP in High Bluestem and Indian Grass is fallow ground that sees little human encroachment. No predator can move through the grass quietly. The buck always has early warning of any approach. The grass covers over the height of their body when lying down. Finally, the fields are typically large allowing room to hide successfully.

It must be the wives that cutoff the heads in the photos?

We have all heard the stories about the hunter that easily harvested his trophy early in his hunt claiming to have been super effective at scouting and picking his spot. This hunter was very sincere. He said it took everything he had and the entire season of sticking to it to tag this buck.

Hard work paid off as this hunter found this one and another buck lying in a brush pile on the last day of the season.

Non resident hunters frequently harvest larger bucks than residents. The reason for this is hard to say. It is true that the non resident is dependent on the Association staff to put them on good ground. The staff's motivation for this is to ensure every hunter has as good as a hunt as possible to motivate them to renew their membership every year as a tradition.  With a steady membership we have less overhead and less work. Less overhead means more money for land contracts and consequently better ground for all hunters and everyone is happier working with people with some basis of knowing each other.
