RecommendationsLong before leaving home for the first deer scouting or hunting trip the new member will talk by telephone to either Jon Nee or John Wenzel and receive their recommendations of where to deer scout or hunt. These recommendations will first be based on their boots on the ground observations from being out on the lease land 12 months a year. Kansas and Iowa deer hunters will talk with John Wenzel and Missouri deer hunters as well as those hunting in southeast Kansas will talk to Jon Nee. The difference expressed here is simply the breakdown of the work load as Jon Nee spends more time on the Missouri and select Kansas leases and John Wenzel over the majority of Kansas and all of Iowa. Trust in these deer hunting recommendations as both Jon and John have a pure motivation of insuring the new to Mid-America Hunting Association deer hunter is on the right habitat within the right region of the state to ensure a good deer hunt and membership renewal. After the first year when most self guided deer hunters will have developed some favored spots with additional recommendations occurring when a hunter starts to deer hunt another state or a different region. As a do it yourself deer hunter organization that is strictly in the hunt execution service of experienced hunters none are to expect that either Jon or John will be their personal scout throughout the year. We will work best with those after their first year that are as nice to us as we seek to be to all others. A typical deer hunter to Association staff relationship that works the best is one where the deer hunter after a hunt or at the end of the season extends the courtesy of a deer hunting feedback email or letter either when a harvest occurs or not and if so pictures are always welcomed. In return we provide our latest observations for that hunter's notebook. An short example of observations would be as shown below.
Most will agree that the deer hunter testimonials and pictures found throughout this website as well as on the update page are certainly a source of good reading and all are at the courtesy of the Association hunters. For those hunters that extend to us this courtesy we always seek to return the favor and do so with our latest observations of what we have seen and where. ReservationsDeer hunting reservations are to an individually numbered/lettered lease as posted to the online lease map library. An example of such map sheet is shown below.
Telephone reservations are from Monday through Friday, 9 through 530 when our secretary is in the office to answer the telephone. Her telephone number is limited to members only keeping her free from non-member casual inquires. The deer hunter will receive immediate feedback that the lease he wants to hunt is available or on a rare occasion another deer hunter beat him to the telephones. For the most part each hunter will get his first choice of places to deer hunt and can have confidence in that as we know what it takes to have a good hunt and limiting deer hunter pressure is a big part of that effort. Have a review of our deer hunter pressure compared to deer hunters and acreage and determine for yourself that each will be able to deer hunt as often as he wants. Telephone reservations may be made up to 30 days in advance of the deer hunt or as short as the day of the deer hunt Monday through Friday. On Friday afternoons each hunter calls in and secures a second deer lease for Saturday and Sunday to insure some flexibility when the office is closed on the weekends. Each hunter during the week days may also change his deer hunting reservation adjusting to weather or wind. For most past their first deer season once they have experienced the telephone reservation system will wait until just before their hunt to determine where to deer hunt. The average deer lease acreage per hunter per day is a 160 acres or a 1/4 section that is 1/2 mile by 1/2 mile in size. This is largely determined in that a 1/4 section or additional 1/4 fraction thereof is the most commonly bought and sold unit of rural acreage. In some places of more open terrain the deer hunter will be on larger acreage and in other areas of exceptional good habitat within some regions we will break the deer leases down into 80 acre sub-parcels. In the case of the 80 pieces it is not that we have a hunter on each 80 acre piece each day. It is that this is a very good deer lease and during the season no one will be permitted just to walk through it adding pressure. These are farms where those that truly want to hunt will commit to a specific location, get in, hunt and get out leaving the rest undisturbed. All of the previous discussion on this web page is all about deer hunter pressure management. Given we are not limited to the driving distance around a club house we make the entire state of Kansas, Missouri and Iowa available to us and we go where we get the best return for our money. For deer hunting that is within the trophy deer regions. Once in those regions we lease that right habitat. After that we cater strictly to the self guided deer hunter that is typically more serious and dedicated to deer hunting than the average hunter and with less impact on the land. We then manage the daily and day to day hunter pressure to insure all are not stepping over the boot prints of others or seeing a bunch of deer stands when the sun comes up. The final test about our deer hunting is to find another private land deer hunting option that is better for the average deer hunter that enjoys the deer hunt free of strings attached.
