Whitetail Deer Scouting Trophy Bucks

Steve is one of the Association's most productive trophy Whitetail Deer hunters and puts in many hours of scouting both before and during the season. These photos are a selection from his scouting camera collection of Association lease land deer. From his own boots on the ground scouting, his scouting camera pictures and past harvest history, Steve has a history of trophy whitetail harvests that will make any one pick up and listen to what he has to say about deer scouting and hunting..

via email: John, I have had several deer scouting cameras out for a week or two. Thought you might want to put some photos on the web of this year's deer. Have not gotten the pictures of several of the B&C bucks and the many P&Y bucks I have been scouting while in some of these areas. I have seen more large bucks this year than any year before, many large 10 points and one perfectly symmetrical 12 point that without a doubt will be a B&C. I have cameras setup within 100 to 200 yards of where I have seen the big boys. So far these are all I got, mostly doe & fawns, a few small bucks, and a couple respectable 9 and 10 point bucks. The best being the one with a small drop tine. I am hoping to get a picture of his daddy or granddaddy I saw, one that looks to be a B&C class with a large drop tine.

Steve's deer scouting camera pictures from just one pre season of field work makes it appear there are an overabundance of trophy quality whitetail deer. The reality is yes there are many good deer however, realize the amount of time Steve puts into deer scouting is more than what most hunters will do. Steve is one of those dedicated deer hunters that has the willingness to do a lot of scouting and has a great ability at finding the quality bucks. His success at scouting and hunting is to the point he goes years between harvests as what would be a trophy whitetail for many of us is simply too small for him to consider to mount. When any deer hunter achieves the level that Steve is at and hunts with a bow the value is in the scouting as much as the the hunt and no longer is a harvest the goal. When Steve goes scouting it is for one particular buck and he hunts that one buck. Understanding that makes a world of difference between those we desire as Association hunters and those we do not.
