We are also bow deer hunters and understand the requirements for a good bow deer hunt. And, we firearms hunt as well knowing full well the value of each method and deer tag draw success potential.
Pictured at the top is the owner Jon Nee and below Bruce Johnson our wetlands manager with a couple of their deer harvests.
While many would think that since we operate a hunting organization we would be the ones bringing in the biggest trophy deer. The truth for us is the same for most. We also must work a job, in this case our job is to get our deer hunters on the big racks. When our deer hunters are satisfied then we have a good life. We simply do not have the time available to spend a week long period at a time in the stand. For Bruce Johnson his primary interest is duck hunting and bow deer hunting. For Jon Nee he is a small business owner and bird dog hunter as well as a fairly good duck caller and excellent turkey hunter he has limited time to actually deer hunt. His raising two teenage boys see to his limited time. In the case of John Wenzel the last of the three Association staffers his time is spent behind bird dogs, on horseback year round, spring turkey hunting or being an alfalfa farmer. His deer hunting is limited to the September Kansas Muzzleloader season readily admitting that bow hunting is simply too hard, time consuming and the wrong time of the year. The bottom line in the case of all three there is only so much time that we can spend out deer hunting. This keeps us in touch with the many hunters in the Association that hunt with us but one week a year. We are sensitive to their time limitations and seek to ensure they spend every bit of their time deer hunting. What should most be valued by the reviewers of this website is that we do not identify ourselves as "deer hunting experts", "pro-hunters", guides or anything else other than we enjoy hunting as much as anyone else. We understand that our hunters will only renew their membership if they have a good deer hunt and that is what we are after - a high year to year renewal rate. MAHAMid-America Hunting Association was created in 1965 by a group of four hunters and Kansas City business owners who wanted to hunt without spending time knocking on landowner's doors for permission. They began to lease land and soon had more than they were willing to manage as well as additional hunters taken on to help pay the leases. They hired Jon Nee (current owner and operator) to manage the then "club" and it continued to grow in acreage and members. The original group of four founders through growth of their respective businesses simply wanted to hunt without the additional responsibility of being directors of the club. Three of the four in turn sold their share of the club to the one last hold out that later then sold the organization to Jon Nee in 1981. Jon Nee then transitioned the membership from a "club" mentality into a hunter organization with a culture focused on do it yourself individual hunts and a set of ethics emphasizing the enjoyment of the day in nature versus the more social group club climate. This one aspect alone changed everything and we believe to be the very foundation of our success and the cause of our members returning each season. From 1981 to the present Jon Nee built the organization until capping off in the late 1980's early 1990's with 170,000 acres of land. That cap reflected the amount of work that he alone could accomplish in one year. After a secession of failed employees John Wenzel entered the organization in 1995 and the Association grew to range from 225,000 to a one time high of 259,000 acres settling within the range of 220,000 to 240,000 acres and a membership in the 800's. That cap has been in effect since 1999 and is what works well for both Jon and John in terms of how much road and land time the two can expend in a year to ensure all is as well as it can be. The Association exists to live up to its maxim of: "Spend your time hunting rather than hunting for a place to hunt!" And, that self guided hunting is on the right habitat within the right region of Iowa, Kansas and Missouri region we choose to work within. Good hunting to all! At this point a reading of our rules would be appropriate. Costs
The definition of what a spouse is should be self evident. However, in the interest of the few questions we receive a spouse is that of an adult married to another. A dependent child is 18 and under in high school or 21 and under in college. they must be under guardianship of the adult and that guardianship extends by exception to adults other than biological father in several cases. Dependent children must hunt on the same numbered/lettered lease as the adult member. Non-hunting immediate spouse and dependent children family members, those within the same house hold of the member, may accompany the member on scouting and hunting trips at no extra charge. This includes those carrying a BB gun and in training to become a hunter. Once the dependent child or spouse starts to carry a shotgun, rifle or bow the membership must be upgraded to reflect that family member. Dependent children memberships may not "float" or "rotate" amongst different children. Each dependent child and spouse that is a hunting member or family member will have their name listed on the ID card. As children develop into hunters or cease hunting due to age the member's membership level can similarly be up or down graded. Increased membership dues by family level reflect paying for hunter pressure on the lease land. Essentially, all must pay for their way. Memberships are for a 365 day year from time of allocation until that anniversary the next calendar year. Our system is simple and all memberships must be paid in full at membership initial allocation and on the anniversary dates a bill will be issued. renewals are at both the election of the hunter and the Association. Membership annual dues will increase commensurate with lease costs. The past history of annual increases have ranged from a $13 sales tax increase one year to an all time high of $65. Memberships may be paid for by major credit card or check. We do not allow any open, guest, corporate or client based memberships. All members join for their individual by name recreation and may not sell, loan or pass out their membership to another. These numbers reflect the number of individual hunters that hunted in each state. Adding up all the numbers does not equal our total membership as many hunted more than one hunting discipline and in more than one state. For example, an deer hunter may have hunted two of our states. His counting is as one person in each state's count. Add to this the same deer hunter also went turkey hunting making this 1 member is counted a total of 3 times above. To gain a more accurate perspective of deer hunting pressure compare any of the numbers above to the total number of hunting days in a season and the amount of land available. Consider also many of these hunters are non-residents of Kansas, Missouri or Iowa and they hunt one or two weeks of valuable vacation time a season. Our membership levels separated by primary and secondary hunting interest is not based on a simple mathematical equation of acreage available by the number of hunters. It is rather based on the carrying capacity of the habitat. This is the art of deer hunting and an intangible made possible by the deer hunting experience of our land managers. The hunter's proof of effectiveness comes from the fact that no hunter is denied deer hunting on his schedule, hunters are not in competition with others, hunters are not crossing boot prints. The confidence the hunter will have a good hunt is that is what brings back membership renewals. This organization is a business and not a god ol' boys hunt'n club. That difference is treatment to all members is the same without any friendship connections. How to hunt with usWe conduct a telephone interview that focuses on two main points. The first is to insure what we offer is what is what the hunter believes it to be to insure no surprises later. The second point is to make sure we can work together. What we will use as a basis for the conversation are the rules for the hunter's primary and secondary hunting discipline. That discussion should generate enough Q&A as well as reveal MAHA for what it provides to determine if we can work together. If both are agreeable then all that remains is payment by credit card or check, sending in the membership agreement and release of liability form and receiving the membership materials of ID card, map issue online and vehicle marker. Once the hunter has the maps in his hands it is much easier to talk about where to hunt for what he is after. The entire process is quick as a 20 minute telephone conversation and mail time for the release of liability and membership material.
